At least 12 people were killed and 13 injured when a bus in which the victims were travelling fell into a 150-metre-deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, an official said.
Ten people died on the spot whereas two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan told news agency PTI. The private bus was plying from Jankichatti to Vikas Nagar when it fell into the gorge near Damta on the Uttarkashi-Yamunotri Highway, he said.
The official informed that a search and rescue operation by the police was underway, as a few bodies could be stuck in the bushes. Four people who were seriously injured in the incident were flown down to Dehradun in a chopper for treatment, he said.
The official said that the bus, after it catapulted into the gorge, landed a few metres from the Yamuna river.
